What are Naval Mines?

A naval mine is an underwater explosive designed to destroy ships and submarines. Even after years of lurking on the ocean floor, these mines remain dangerous, capable of exploding or leaking harmful chemicals.

What are Mine Countermeasures (MCM)?

Mine countermeasures (MCM), also known as subsea mine neutralization, involve safely identifying and neutralizing unexploded ordinance (UXO) such as underwater sea mines. These operations are typically carried out using trained clearance divers, specialized ships, or unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). These operations involve navigating to the identified mine’s location—whether it is floating, anchored, or resting on the seabed—and neutralizing the threat. The ultimate goal of MCM is to ensure safe waterways and protect ships by eliminating the danger posed by mines.

ROVs Protect Divers

Remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) provide naval EOD teams with a safer way to neutralize ocean mines, eliminating the need to place clearance divers in harm’s way. These advanced underwater drones are specifically designed to deliver fast and efficient solutions while keeping personnel out of danger. Customized for inspection and mine disposal, ROVs streamline operations and enhance safety during the detonation of underwater threats.

Military teams trust the SRV-8X MDV because it stands out in cost-efficiency, ease of use, and time-saving performance. ROV pilots can master controls quickly thanks to our user-friendly design and intuitive software. With the ability to neutralize threats efficiently, these underwater drones save both time and costs, making them an indispensable asset for EOD missions.

How to Neutralize a Mine with an Inspection ROV

  1. Find the Mine – Use the ROV’s sonar and camera to locate the sea mine and move towards it.
  2. Position the ROV – Move the ROV to place the charge disruptor exactly on the mine’s weak spot.
  3. Release the Shock Tube – Let go of the shock tube and back the ROV up to a safe distance.
  4. Move to Safety – Drive the ROV to a safe distance away from the mine.
  5. Set Off the Explosion – Once the ROV is at a safe distance, trigger the explosion to destroy the mine safely.
